Welcome to Arrowhead Forge School of Blacksmithing
We are so glad you have an interest in learning one of the oldest trades in history.
Explore the classes below to find a project that interests you.
We keep classes very small, 2 to 3 students per class, so you are guaranteed personal instruction the whole time.
Each day is full of hands-on forging as you learn by doing the art of blacksmithing and of course everything you make is yours to take home.
But remember the biggest take home is the knowledge, experience and confidence you will receive.
Which class is right for you?
-weekend Classes-
Frontier Knife
You will be guided through forging a knife blade from high carbon steel then grind and file it to final shape before heat treating and adding an antler handle. If time allows we will be making leather sheaths to accompany. The finished knife is of course yours to take home.
Tomahawk
We will start with the folded and welded method of making a tomahawk or light axe and then move onto making a second one using a different approach. The finished project will be a good functional small axe with a hardened steel cutting edge. Being familiar with forge welding will be a big advantage in taking this class. Hickory handles are provided. The finished tomahawk(s) are of course yours to take home.
Cooking Utensils
Have fun making your own cooking/grilling tools and learning blacksmithing at the same time. I will guide you through forging skewers, a meat fork, steak flipper, spatula, tongs and ladle. The number of cooking utensils we make is only limited by our time together. All the finished utensils you make in this course are of course yours to take home.
-week-long classes-
Fundamental Blacksmithing Skills
No Skills to Intermediate Level
This is where it all starts. Whether you are a weekend warrior with blacksmithing, a student of YouTube, or just curious about learning an ancient craft, this is the class for you. A five- day compressive course in traditional forging skills. This class dives into over a dozen fundamental blacksmithing skills including heat treating, forge welding, punching, drifting, simple tool smithing and many other skill sets teaching you not only the how but also the why. Everyday you will be trained on new techniques while making a different project to take home. You will complete all projects by the end of the week and will be well on your way to a successful start in blacksmithing, ready to advance to a new level.
Blacksmithing Tools
Beginner to Intermediate level
A week-long class focused on just making blacksmithing tools. This class takes the skills taught in the fundamentals class to the next level. Hammers, tongs, hand held tools, handled tools, anvil tools- a whole cross section of forging tools will be made during this week. Students will be guided through the making of a basic blacksmithing kit and all projects will be completed by the end of the week.
Classic Scrolls & Joinery
Intermediate to Advanced
You will be guided through the drawing of a working plan, making specialty tooling, traditional joinery, forging to dimension, scroll work and building a frame to assemble an ornate grille which will show the level of skill you have obtained as a blacksmith. We aren't sticklers for pre-requisites but to get the most out of this class, students should have practiced the skills taught in our fundamentals class such as good fire and hammer control, drawing out, punching and drifting, forge welding, etc.
